UK-based pharmaceutical companies will have to make explicit their relationship with patient organisations following the publication of new European rules.

Pharmaceutical companies operating in the UK must abide by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry's code of conduct, but that will now need to be changed to reflect to new rules introduced by the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations.

The new ABPI code - which must be implemented by July 2008 - will include a new requirement for companies to detail any financial backing or 'indirect non-financial support' they give to patient groups.
