The work of NICE goes beyond the headline-grabbing stories that sometimes follow its rulings on which drugs should or should not be used.
In the context of future NHS service delivery based on meeting the needs of patients through their differing care pathways, it is NICE's clinical guidelines that are arguably more important.
These guidelines can be used to ensure the most appropriate care and interventions are made along the patient journey. They bring a combination of best practice and best use of resources.
And, as its growing focus on commissioning guides shows, it is not just providers that should look to NICE.
