Thousands of people with Alzheimer's disease could be in line to receive free nursing care at home following a ruling by the Health Service Ombudsman. The ombudsman held up a complaint made by Barbara Pointon after she was told that her husband would only receive free nursing care if he was in a nursing home or hospital. Her husband is now receiving£1,000 per week for NHS-funded care at home.
The Alzheimer's Society said the ruling broke new ground by requiring the psychological and not just physical needs of people with dementia to be taken into account.
