I would like to congratulate you on the extremely powerful photograph in this week's HSJ.

('Ways and means', pages 12-13, 9 August). If that does not stir emotions throughout the healthcare industry then nothing will. I have shared this picture with colleagues and many were brought close to tears; it reminded us all why we came in to the health service originally.

OK, we have a nursing crisis and, as the RCN gerontological nursing programme director Pauline Ford points out, the profession may not be ready to accept the responsibility of being the gatekeepers to free nursing care.

But if we can inspire and enthuse with images like this, then we just might recruit the types of people we need in a health service of the future and, more particularly, in the care of older people. I feel a project for better recruitment coming on.
