Consultant obstetricians and gynaecologists returning to work after a prolonged break should be exempt from on-call work and should operate only with the help of a consultant colleague for at least a week, according to new guidelines from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.The college says that consultants returning to clinical work typically after absence through secondment, maternity leave or sabbatical should have a planned programme of reintroduction and appraisal.
