As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the NHS, I attended the NHS Confederation conference in London at which the prime minister delivered a keynote address (Conference Focus, pages 7-12, 9 July).

The prime minister's speech was the most inspirational I have ever heard from a politician speaking on the NHS during my 25 years' service.

His agenda for the modernisation of the service, while updating and upholding the original values, can only be described as truly inspirational and more valuable than the additional resources - which are welcomed.

The service must now pull together to support and deliver his vision.
