Doctors working in prisons should spend a minimum of one session a week working in the NHS to ensure they are up to date, according to a report from a joint prison service/NHS working party.Among more than 50 recommendations, the report concludes there is a need for increased partnership if the prison service is to recruit and retain medical staff, with prison doctors having access to the same training opportunities, pay, terms and conditions. The report highlights the need for continued improvement to ensure prisoners receive the same quality of healthcare available in the community, identifying particular problems with mental health services despite the fact nine out of 10 prisoners suffer some form of mental disorder.
