Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon has said meeting the country's national cancer waiting time target is 'long overdue'.

The number of people treated within two months of referral stood at 84.5 per cent, below the target of 95 per cent, from January to March.

Ms Sturgeon, who became health secretary in May after the Scottish National Party's election victory, said: 'This target should have been met by the end of 2005 and the fact is that this is now long overdue.'
