The Scottish Executive has published its first report on the incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureaus in the country's 18 acute hospitals, showing a range of zero infections per 1,000 bed days in some units, to 0.25 infections per 1,000 bed days in others.Scottish health minister Malcolm Chisholm said that although the risk was small, he wanted to reduce it further.Audit Scotland, an independent body, is to visit all Scotland's hospitals to assess standards of cleanliness.But at the end of last week, cardio thoracic surgery was suspended at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh after 13 patients contracted MRSA.
