Security at Ashworth, Rampton and Broadmoor Hospitals has been tightened up under new NHS directions.Managers now have access to a wider range of tests for illicit substances, including breath testing for alcohol and mouth and hair swabs for drugs.They can monitor patients' telephone calls where there is a need to protect the safety of patients and others and have greater control over patients' access to computer games.Patients with serious personality disorder can be locked in their rooms overnight.
A spokesperson for Ashworth Hospital said the directions had already been implemented.
