The National Shared Services Initiative is to become a special health authority from next spring when it will be renamed the NHS Shared Services Authority.The new arrangement will provide a formalised system of accountability, a board representing stakeholders, an audit committee and an employing body.The Department of Health will now appoint a chief executive and a board, with the chair being appointed by health secretary Alan Milburn, and the HA will be established as a shadow organisation towards the end of 2002. Its key projects are shared financial services, electronic staff records and developing the shared services model.
