The pharmacy reward scheme came into operation on Monday, offering contractors financial rewards of up to£10,000 for identifying illegal prescription forms and helping to prevent fraud. NHS Executive guidance says prescription fraud costs the NHS 'millions of pounds each year'. The scheme has been introduced alongside more secure prescription forms to help cut losses. Contractors can qualify for a basic award by reporting fraudulent forms before items are dispensed and can get a bonus reward for passing on information that stops fraud or leads to recovery of NHS money.
