Half of GP practices have no policy on screening for diabetes, and three in 10 have no specific diabetes clinic, according to a survey by Diabetes UK and Nuffield Institute for Health. The report, which says the lack of specialist staff and resources could be putting lives at risk, also found over a third of GP practice nurses run diabetes clinics in isolation without adequate back up from specialist diabetes healthcare professionals. Diabetes UK chief executive Paul Street said: 'Diabetes is set to double in the UK by 2010. Resources have to be targeted properly into diabetes care to tackle this growing epidemic. '
