Local government could have more effect on the nation's health than the NHS, according to the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers. It claims that the community planning process is a chance for local government to reclaim its role as the champion of people's health by using new powers to promote the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of communities.SOLACE president David Henshaw said: 'The health agenda nationally is still dominated by sickness and treatment of ill-health.Health should be defined in terms of the wellbeing of citizens and communities, rather than the sickness of individuals.'
