Tobacco sponsorship and advertising is to be phased out from 14 February under the government's transitional regulations.

All new tobacco sponsorship agreements will be prohibited from this date but existing sponsorship agreements will continue until 30 July 2003.Global events that have tobacco sponsorship amounting to over£2.5m will have until 31 July 2005, the date of the new European tobacco advertising directive, to find alternative sponsors.The visibility of tobacco advertising will also be reduced when advertising on billboards and in magazines and newspapers is banned on 14 February.Regulations on point-of-sale advertising and brandsharing have yet to be finalised.
