One of the saddest events in recent weeks - surrounding the headlines about what is happening to our health service - was the appallingly patronising way in which the prime minister suddenly appeared on Frost on Sunday.

He sat glum-faced and said: 'I take full responsibility, ' without giving one honest answer. He could have said: 'This is what it will cost to have a first-class funded service, and I shall put that question to the British public at the next general election, having put money in, meanwhile, from my war chest.'

For goodness' sake, once and for all be straight - be honest - and above all for our health's sake, spell out the bill and explain where the money is going to come from.

Don't dodge the key question, prime minister.
