The Commission for Health Improvement has praised the 'open culture' of Pinderfields and Pontefract trust, and flagged up its efforts to collect information about risk. It also spoke highly of the trust's attempts to train and educate staff.

The clinical governance review highlighted problems recruiting groups of staff as well as past difficulties meeting waiting-list targets, which were now being 'actively addressed'.

Since the trust merged in 1997, the two separate hospitals have been part of a debate over where a new hospital should be placed.CHI said that 'running two hospitals in close proximity, with some overlap of services, has created problems' which should be resolved when the new hospital at Pinderfields is completed - in seven years.
