One hundred trusts have pledged their support to a patient safety campaign launched at the NHS Confederation conference that aims to achieve 'no avoidable death, no avoidable harm'.

The Patient Safety First campaign is focusing on five key interventions that will address the highest-risk areas revealed by data from the National Reporting and Learning System.

Sponsored by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, the National Patient Safety Agency and the Health Foundation, the project will start this month and is scheduled to run for two years.

Speaking at the launch on Thursday, campaign director and Luton and Dunstable foundation trust chief executive Stephen Ramsden, said: "The campaign is being developed and led by a team of dedicated and passionate clinicians and managers across England - the core team - united in their experience of improving patient safety in their own organisations and teams."

Mr Ramsden said that the campaign is "by the service for the service", with involvement in the campaign's development "on all levels, from boards to teams, to individuals".

He added that considered sign-up by trusts was important and that he didn't want it to be a "tick box exercise".
