The King's Fund has asked Sir Derek Wanless to carry out a review into supply and demand of social care for elderly people in England.

The former NatWest group chief executive, who carried out reviews of future NHS spending and public health, has been asked to examine trends over the next 20 years that are likely to affect the demand for social care for older people, and to work out how social care might be funded.

Sir Derek said the review was necessary to ensure services were fit for the 21st century.
