Sometimes, it seems, managers go out of their way to live up to the stereotypes that nurses attach to them.
King's Healthcare chief executive Ron De Witt - who is a nurse - hit the headlines in the summer when he was summoned to the NHS Executive to explain why he was lavishing£100,000 on refurbishing his management team's offices - while student housing was allegedly being sold off. Unison nursing student president Alice Dawnay raged: 'At a time when the hospital has sold off much of its nurse accommodation, Mr De Witt can look through rose-tinted glasses at the refurbishment.'
However, King's had not sold off accommodation but was in the process of acquiring extra housing. And the refurbishment was part of a£100m modernisation plan for all the trust.
