Supported employment offers people with mental health problems a chance to get work, achieve recovery and lead fulfilling lives, according to a leading US expert.

Delivering the 2008 Sainsbury Centre lecture last night, Professor Robert Drake called for mental health services in the US and the UK to replace ineffective practices such as day treatment with proven programmes of supported employment.

He said: "We need to ensure vocational support is truly integrated with mental healthcare and to reallocate funds from ineffective services to those that work."
