The star performers in this year’s HSJ Value Awards - which celebrate the work of NHS teams across the areas of transformation, clinical and medical services, and operational and corporate services - have now been announced

A total of 320 entries from across the sector were whittled down to 169 shortlisted entries and then 18 deserving category winners. A further 18 high commendations have also been awarded to organisations whose innovations and initiatives particularly impressed the 70 judges.

Despite the challenging circumstances, and a longer programme than usual due to covid-19, 2020 was a successful year for the awards, which took place online this year and were supported by AdviseInc, with all the achievements shared throughout the event on Twitter.

Winner of the HSJ Value Award of the Year was Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust with its Vocational Rehabilitation Service. This offers support to people with complex mental health to achieve their employment goals with hope, optimism and confidence.

Finance team of the year was Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust, which has embraced an initiative called Future-Focused Finance, which it says is about improving NHS finance for everyone; recognising the need for strong financial skills and understanding across all professional groups to deliver good patient care and value for tax payers.

Winner of the acute service redesign award was Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care FT and Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council for its Integrated Urgent Care Team - Home First. This enables a rapid crisis response service (within two hours) aligned to the NHS long-term plan for referrals received from GPs, ambulance services and local care homes, by creating capacity and resilience within the system.

Excellence in redesign featured in other categories. Find out who triumphed in redesigns of a mental health service, primary care or community service, specialist service, and system or commissioner-led service.

Further information about each of these projects can also be found on the HSJ Solutions best practice database.

  • The 2021 Value Awards programme is opening for entries on Monday, 14 September. The unprecedented challenges faced by the NHS - and the innovative ways the service has dealt with them - will undoubtedly dominate this latest instalment of the awards. Register today to be kept updated.
