Chair, Monitor ▼10

Last year Steve Bundred, then Audit Commission chief executive, stuck his head above the parapet to give early warning of the cuts to come.

Made chair of Monitor in March - much to the dismay of then shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley - the impact of the spending squeeze on foundation trusts is just one of several tough realities now facing him.

Monitor met the government’s proposals to develop it into an economic regulator for the health sector with “genuine excitement”, to use Mr Bundred’s words. But with a very different role planed for this body, it is not thought certain he will survive the transition.
