He was castigated as a misogynist, mediocrity and moron after his comments about female presenters propelled him into the op-ed pages. Before that, even devoted Today listeners would have struggled to name him. He has been criticised as too lightweight for the agenda-setting programme. But the substance remains and with more than six million listeners every morning, including pretty much everyone that matters, his decisions could hardly be more influential. He is likely to give proponents and critics of the controversial health reforms significant air time in 2011.
