As director general of research and development at the Department of Health, Professor Dame Sally Davies commands a budget of around £1bn.
She is also the chief scientific officer for the DH and NHS, and has been spoken of as a possible future chief medical officer. She has been praised for promoting research in the NHS and found money to put into fast track swine flu studies. She holds a chair at Imperial College London, and is an expert on sickle cell disease.
