PERFORMANCE: The foundation is on target to receive payments under the North West’s “advancing quality” programme, which offers incentives for quality improvement in five key areas of treatment.

Liverpool Heart and Chest is among the 25 per cent of top performers in all three focus areas of the programme that apply to its work – acute myocardial infarction, cardio artery bypass graft, and heart failure – according to a report by NHS Knowsley.

The programme involves incentives for improvements in the quality of care provided by hospitals using quality indicators relating to clinical outcomes, patient reported outcome measures, and patient experience.

For 2010-2011, the regionally determined element of the Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) programme was used to financially incentivise providers.
