Three non-executive directors have stepped down at a trust beset with financial problems and controversy over possible service changes.

Dr Ian Hindle, Ann Knott and Dr William Proudlock left United Lincolnshire Hospitals trust after meeting with chair David Bowles. It is understood that they were asked to resign. The remaining four non-executive directors are to meet with Mr Bowles shortly.

Mr Bowles, who took up post in July, said: 'It is the right time for us to seek replacement appointments to the board.'

The prospect of losing services from some of the trust's hospitals has led to protests from clinical staff and local people. Four staff members, including former interim chief executive Helen Scott-South, are currently suspended pending investigations into orthopaedic waiting lists.
