PERFORMANCE: Suspected breast cancer patients are missing hospital appointments because GPs are failing to inform them how urgently their symptoms need to be treated.
NHS Nottinghamshire County minutes say the Cancer Unit Management Board had noted that “patients identified the reason for non attendance at breast appointments was due to GPs not informing patients of the urgency of the matter”.
Although all breast symptom appointments were subject to the two week target, in a “large number of cases”, there was”no suspicion of cancer and therefore no urgency,” according to Dr Tony Marsh, Clinical Commisisoning Group representative for Nottingham North and East.
