PERFORMANCE: The Care Quality Commission requested a formal review of Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre’s compliance with hygiene standards.

The CQC wrote to the trust on January 20 requesting a review of compliance against outcome 8 of the commission’s 28 regulations. Of the 28, 16 apply to all providers and must be complied with in order for the organisation to be registered with the CQC.

NOC declared compliance with the essential standards for people who use services as set out in the guidance about compliance when first registering with the CQC earlier this year.

The trust had a green rating against the outcome from September to December inclusive. A quality risk profile (QRP) compiled by the CQC from information including national patient survey results, NHS Litigation Authority Risk Management Standards compliance, comments on NHS Choices, Health Protection Agency surveillance, Secondary Uses Service data, NHS Staff Survey, and department of health central returns, highlighted concerns about compliance.

A paper to the board on the issue stated: “The NOC self assessment of the evidence of compliance against this outcome indicates that we have no significant lapses, only a small number of areas of lack of assurance (low risk) or minor actions to be completed.

“We were therefore able to send a comprehensive assurance log and evidence files to the CQC by their deadline of Tuesday 26 January and currently await their response.”
