Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust: Inpatient Pain Team - Mobile Block Service

The development and successful roll-out of a Mobile Block Service at Stoke Mandeville Hospital is a first for trusts in the region, said organisers. The service provides rapid regional analgesia – numbing a particular part of the body for pain relief – for patients admitted with traumatic rib fractures and who are at risk of deterioration, wherever they are in the hospital, not just in theatres.

ICU admissions from rib fractures have fallen from 22 per cent to less than 1 per cent, and deaths in 30 days from 9 per cent to 5 per cent. The project was highly praised by the judges for surpassing award criteria, showcasing impressive outcomes, and widespread and strong patient involvement. Judges foresee its potential national implementation as the gold standard in innovation for benefiting a high-risk group.
