Mid and South Essex Foundation Trust: Pilot of a Novel Combined Anaesthetic and Geriatrician Pre-assessment Clinic for Older People with Colorectal Cancer

As a team already providing care to frail patients, the trust developed a clinic to provide comprehensive geriatric assessment to older adults and frail patients undergoing elective colorectal cancer surgery alongside their conventional anaesthetic assessment. Patients see a geriatrician and anaesthetist in the same appointment, providing a streamlined assessment experience and an opportunity for shared decision-making. Results have demonstrated lower mortality and increased access to curative cancer surgery for older age groups. Patient and colleague feedback has been resoundingly positive. The trust has multiple planned avenues of expansion for the service. The judges felt this project successfully enhanced patient safety and outcomes.
