FINANCE: The policy of penalising hospital trusts when their patients are readmitted within 30 days of discharge will cost The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust “many £millions”, it reports.

A paper to the foundation trust’s board of governors in March said, based on 2010 figures, it expected to lose around £3.42m. The paper said the trust “cannot quantify the cost of readmissions to a different healthcare provider following an initial admission at Newcastle Hospitals”. It said: “Therefore, the expected impact on the Trust in the 2011-12 year is likely to be many £millions.”
