Mr Hill has previously been an interim chief executive both in Salisbury and on secondment to the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases. He has a clinical background and joined Salisbury in 1986.

“This is a challenging period for the NHS, but we have a good reputation and high quality clinical staff who provide excellent standards of care,” Mr Hill said. “They are supported by great administrative and ancillary support teams and very experienced executive and managerial teams. It’s important that we continue to maintain the high standards we have set ourselves over the years and I will be looking to build on our strengths as we continue to move forward.”

Trust chair Luke March said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Caspar for his contribution and wish him well for the future.  Peter Hill will provide continuity in leadership,  an in-depth knowledge of the organisation and the skills we need for this period and I am delighted that he is taking up the role of Interim chief executive.”

A trust statement said Mr Ridley had decided to leave “to pursue other opportunities”. He was only appointed chief executive in November last year.
