10.41am: The CCG authorisations have been welcomed by NHS Confederation chief executive Mike Farrar - who says they must be given the freedom to succeed.
They have also been welcomed by NHS Clinical Commissioners, which represents more than half of CCGs. Its president Mike Dixon said the announcement was a “major stride forward”.
10.40am: The NHS Commissioning Board has announced the first CCG authorisations - three quarters have been given conditions, but many are expected to be lifted in March.
9.52am Doctors reluctant to blow the whistle at work have been offered a new helpline amid fears that clinicians who speak out risk losing their jobs. The service is being rolled out after consultant paediatrician Kim Holt, who flagged up unsafe practices in the unit where Baby P was examined, claimed the NHS was still “too dangerous” for whistleblowers.
9.51am The former chief executive of the first private company to take over the running of an NHS hospital has denied that he was sacked. Ali Parsa, who announced last week that he was stepping down as head of Circle Holdings less than one year into a ground-breaking 10-year contract to run Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridgeshire, was before the Public Accounts Committee yesterday.
