The winners of the Wellcome Image Awards 2014 show the world of health and science in minute detail

An electron micrograph scan of a kidney stone and human heart tissue are among the 18 winners of the Wellcome Image Awards 2014.

The awards are intended to champion the incredible cutting edge techniques in scientific imaging.

The award-winning images, which also include a photograph of a deer tick embedded in human skin and an MRI of a human brain nerve fibres, give insight into the world around and within us.

Fergus Walsh, judging panel member and BBC medical correspondent, said: “This year’s entries are both technically brilliant and visually striking.

“Never before have I thought of a kidney stone or a nit as beautiful, but the Wellcome Image Awards show time and again that there can always be a different way of looking at things.”

The winning images will be displayed at four major science centres, as well as in a window display at the Wellcome Trust’s headquarters in London.
