HSJ100 2013 unveiled
Incoming NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens has secured second place in the annual HSJ100 ranking of the most powerful people in health – despite not starting his new job until April.
The HSJ100 – now in its eighth year – measures influence for the next 12 months. Mr Stevens was only pipped to the number one position by health secretary Jeremy Hunt, whose interventionist approach has resulted in a jump from fourth place.

Sir David Nicholson, the man who has dominated the HSJ100 for the last seven years – taking the number one spot three times – is placed 10th, underlining the impact he can still have within the last few months of his tenure.
Hospital chief inspector Sir Mike Richards is the highest placed clinician, three places ahead of NHS England medical director Sir Bruce Keogh. NHS England deputy chief executive Dame Barbara Hakin is the highest ranked of 23 Women – at number 16.
Notable new entries, apart from Mr Stevens, include the prime minister’s health policy adviser Nick Seddon, Care Quality Commission chair David Prior and British Medical Association’s GP committee chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul.
