This HSJ event, run in association with Four Seasons Health Care, assembled an expert panel to discuss the reasons older people end up in hospital longer than they need to be – and considered possible solutions to this growing problem.

Central to the discussions was the question of whether sustainability and transformation plans could be the vehicle for the creation of a healthcare system more attuned to the needs of an ageing society.

Panel members were certain there was plenty of good practice out there which desperately needed to be spread more reliably throughout the system. That includes the creation of urgent care hubs in the community, increased use of multidisciplinary team working, and finding better ways to work with care home providers.
