NHS Direct has recorded its best ever performance in June 2007. It has beaten government targets covering access, response times, and clinical sorting to make sure patients are given appropriate advice.

NHS Direct answered 467,000 calls last month and 98 per cent were answered within 60 seconds.

'These figures show that we are providing an exceptional level of service to callers, enabling them to receive rapid and appropriate health advice,' said chief operating officer Dr Mike Sadler.
