The National Audit Office has published a new report titled Evaluation of Regulatory Impact Assessments 2006-07.

According to the report, regulatory impact assessments, used to assess the need for, and potential impact of, new regulations, are not always used effectively. The report states that such assessments often fail to consider fully the cost and benefit of regulation and do not take account of the long-term implications of regulation, particularly for issues of compliance and enforcement.
