Hospital consultants earn, on average, over four times more than nurses, according to estimates published today by the Information Centre for health and social care.

The figures are the first national estimates produced since 2004, when Agenda for Change - the new system of pay and conditions - was introduced in the NHS. Hospital consultants are estimated to have earned an average of£111,800 from their NHS work, while qualified nurses earned an estimated£26,100.

The figures are based on pay data collected between January and March 2007.
