WINNER: Hill Dickinson LLP

Hill Dickinson developed a protocol to ensure quick and just settlement of a major group claim, which is now seen as the “gold standard” for approaching this type of claim in the health sector.
This protocol – used to settle the Liverpool Women’s Urogynaecological Group Action, helped to reduce costs for the NHS through agreed hourly rates, single joint experts, and ensuring experts saw multiple patients in a single day. The focus was on swift settlement of claims – with early identification and settlement of claims with merit. This benefitted those patients, limited the amount of time key people at the trust involved had to devote to the case, and saved the NHS around £12m.
The judges felt that this protocol was an innovative approach to group actions resulting in a collaborative and patient centred approach to litigation, delivering a substantial genuine cost saving to the NHS which can be rolled out nationwide.
Finalists:
- Bevan Brittan LLP: NHS Three Strand Approach
- Cripps LLP: Primary Care Advantage (legal and advisory services)
- Hempsons: System transformation in Greater Manchester
- Ward Hadaway: Knowledge and Legal Advice Centre (KnowLA)
