University College London Hospitals Foundation Trust: Find and treat – healthcare for homeless and vulnerable people

The University College London Hospitals FT’s “find and treat” services target homeless and vulnerable people who are at high risk of tuberculosis, blood-borne viruses and other serious health problems.

It uses state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment in a mobile van to provide digital X-rays to more than 8,000 people a year, together with point-of-care testing for TB and hepatitis C and offering immunisations against flu, pneumococcal pneumonia and hepatitis B.

Since 2005, it has provided screening and healthcare to over 100,000 people and intensive care management to almost 4,000 patients with active TB and hepatitis C, both of which require a long course of treatment.

The service is regularly commissioned to screen in major towns and cities around the country, and has helped establish services in Romania and Ireland. An economic analysis has shown the service has a net cost of £1.4m and gained 220 quality-adjusted life years.
