Chelsea and Westminster and Royal Marsden Shared Procurement Service: Standardisation of wound care formulary

Standardising the wound care products used across six acute, three community and a mental health trust in North West London has yielded annual savings of £840,000 without impacting on quality.

A clinically-led selection process was used to decide which products to include, with up to 18 suppliers for each product area being reduced to one. The approach has also been adopted by the Central North West London Clinical Commissioning Group, so savings are being made on FP10 prescriptions.

The procurement was led by the Chelsea and Westminster and Royal Marsden Shared Procurement Service which used the buying power of the network to access discounts on cost – up to 18 per cent below the standard national pricing.

New training programmes are being rolled out to communicate the wound care formulary. Patients are now getting continuity in the products used when they are in hospital and after discharge – and, in some cases, the lower prices mean higher quality products are used than previously.
