Stronger collaboration throughout the hospital

Getinge’s INSIGHT solution creates an overview of the patient flow in and across departments. New and updated information is automatically shared in real time between the screens to ensure that staff are working with the same data, and that the patient receives correct and safe treatment at the right time.

Better collaboration across departments and functions

One of the areas where users and administrators have reported INSIGHT to have a clear and positive influence on the workflow is when it comes to creating better collaboration across departments and functions. By sharing information between departments, staff and collaborating departments have a far better overview of what is planned and when their expertise is needed.

“Back in the day, a printout was attached to a table, so that the therapists could come and see the patients they were supposed to attend to. In other words, it was not until they were actually in the ward that they knew who they would be seeing during their rounds and they had no time to prepare. So compared with that, it was easy for everyone to see that the system makes a lot of sense,” said Kim Kristensen, project manager, Clinical It, Odense University Hospital and Svendborg Hospital.

Overall benefits

Getinge INSIGHT lists and overviews can be shared across departments, providing a host of overall advantages for the staff, who can create smoother and more effective workflows:

  • Better collaboration internally within the department and across departments and functions
  • Better planning of workflows and daily activities
  • Better use of existing data
  • Fewer interruptions

One of the advantages of the INSIGHT solution is that the staff are far better informed about what is happening in the department. At Odense University Hospital, only the coordinator previously knew which patients were inbound:

“INSIGHT makes it much easier to remain informed and to stay on top of everything. You know in advance that the patient who needs antibiotics IV treatment three times a day, is arriving at 10am. This was something that was previously only known to 1-2 people, so the patient was received very differently,” said Mai-Britt Hagen Hansen, product manager, Clinical It, Odense University Hospital and Svendborg Hospital.

Getinge’s INSIGHT solution solves this by enabling the ward to add a therapy activity to the patient when they need to be seen by a physiotherapist or occupational therapist. When the therapist has seen and accepted the activity, the status of the relevant activity changes to “Ongoing”.

After the last visit with the patient, the therapist is required to finish the activity and thereby keep all of the parties involved updated regarding the patient’s treatment status and course of treatment.

Experience shows that staff greatly appreciate being kept informed and able to present themselves properly as a department. The host of different overviews allows them to receive the patient and know exactly why they are arriving at the department, which room they are assigned to, and which nurse is responsible for the patient today.

“If the nurses have an overview, each one of them can say to the patient: ‘Welcome. You will be in room 4. So I will call Mai-Britt. She is the nurse who will come and take care of you.’ This allows them to present themselves properly as a department and tell the patients that they are welcome. Instead of standing there, not knowing what is supposed to happen, which is not reassuring for the patients,” continued Kim Kristensen.

The INSIGHT solution is recognised for its intuitive user interface, which is easy to read and can be quickly updated. If the system is expanded with graphic components, selected data can be presented in simple overviews of current and future number of occupied beds, the planned flow, the distribution of specialties or triage levels and much more. This provides a whole host of advantages for the staff, including:

  • Centralised coordination
  • Support for preventive processes
  • Increased patient safety and treatment quality
  • Focus on meeting defined goals
  • Better here-and-now prioritisation
