Implementation Of SIFE (Supporting Information From Employer) Pathway To Support IENS (Internationally Educated Nurses) To Complete The Nursing and Midwidery Council Registration

Scarcity of nursing workforce and ethical recruitment is an ongoing challenge faced by the UK Healthcare system. However, officials have been overlooking thousands of Internationally Educated Nurses working as unregistered practitioners in the UK for more a decade. Project organisers led the campaign to help these IENs to complete their UK nursing registration without language tests. The NMC implemented the SIFE pathway on February 2023 following our campaign and public consultation. Around 1,000 IENs received their NMC registration in the past five months and many more are added daily to the nursing workforce. The panel were impressed with the way that this work disrupted outdated policy to create real change, benefiting colleagues and changing processes on a larger scale.
