Epilepsy claims around 1,200 lives a year in the UK – and 42 per cent of these deaths are preventable.

The application is based on a seizure safety checklist that has demonstrated improved communication, safety and reduced mortality

This project used National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’s guidance and the recognised quality improvement method of Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles to develop an evidence-based, patient-led mobile app for patients to manage their own illness and their own risk.

Patient Safety Awards 2016: Education and Training in Patient Safety

EpsMon is the world’s first evidence based mobile application for patient self-empowerment in epilepsy. It is based on a seizure safety checklist that has demonstrated improved communication, safety and reduced mortality.

EpsMon has been tested and used in practice where it has identified risk factors for individuals and enabled them to receive preventive interventions.

The judges said: “We were impressed with the use of technology to overcome barriers and empower health professionals and patients to prevent deaths. The results are outstanding.”
