Yeovil District Hospital FT: Implicit Bias in Maternity Care

This QI project aimed to address huge inequities in the UK’s maternal/neonatal mortality by providing training on implicit bias, stereotyping, and clinical assessment of babies from ethnic minority families. A training package was created for midwives, pre and post-training surveys completed and descriptive analysis alongside thematic analysis were used to analyse findings.

Midwives rated the training highly with many unaware of the impact of bias on mortality. Post-training, they identified wanting to be more inclusive. Training was well evaluated but more training and research is needed to improve the safety of mothers and babies.

The judges said this was a fantastic initiative with great engagement, and an impressive spread of learning and training. The initiative was highly topical, and the presenters were honest and open in their delivery. The statistics presented were powerful, hard hitting and had immediate impact.
