In December 2020, NHS England directed NHS London to create extra hospital bed capacity in response to the worsening pandemic. On 26 December, a team of senior leaders, planners and project managers from NHS London, NELFT, Ministry of Defence and other stakeholders assembled at the ExCeL conference centre in London’s Docklands. NHS London and NELFT, assisted by medical and engineering experts from a Military Assistance Team, led the planning and delivery of a new Nightingale Hospital facility at the ExCeL, achieving initial operating capability in only 10 days.
