Health figures to enter new parliament
Several doctors and a former researcher are among the 2010 parliamentary intake who have an interest in health.
Conservative Paul Maynard, who advised Liam Fox during his time as shadow health secretary, won Blackpool North and Cleveleys from Labour.
Margot James won Stourbridge for the Tories from Labour. She founded and later sold a successful healthcare public relations firm, and has served as a non-executive director of a mental health trust.
GP Philip Lee – who has complained about MPs’ lack of scientific knowledge – has taken over the Bracknell seat for the Conservatives and Sarah Wollaston, also a GP, has taken over in Totnes.
Conservative Daniel Poulter, an obstetric and gynaecology consultant, has taken over in Suffolk Central and Ipswich North.
For Labour, Owen Smith, head of government relations for pharma firm Pfizer, has taken over Labour’s Pontypridd seat.
