Tories take seat facing maternity unit closure

Conservative David Nuttall has taken Bury North.

During the campaign, Tory shadow health minister Andrew Lansley said a Conservative government would “have the power to [stop maternity service closure at Fairfield Hospital] within days if we are elected”.

The hospital, run by Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust, was included under plans to centralise maternity services in the North West, taking the number of birth centres from 12 to eight.
